<image:caption>This residence expresses ideas of planar transformations as an aesthetic and a structural logic. The planar relationship between the ground slab and the roof slab depicts a dialectal conversation about thinness, thickness and convergence. The wing shaped roof plate transforms and merges with the ground slab at a singular point to transfer all its gravitational loads. Thus allow us to achieve a column free house, freeing all the rest of the form to float and land how it pleases.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Black Lotus - L O T U S</image:title>
<image:caption>This project is interested in the realized and unrealized potential of Black Americans who have been disproportionally affected by mass incarceration. Many Black Americans fall victim to the criminal justice system, never being able to restart their life post incarceration. These young men and women return to society seeking to transform their lives for the better however many are unable to gain employment, not only because of there record but because while in the system they were unable to develop their unrealized potential. In our installation we illuminate these issues, and create a visual dialogue framed around lost potential vs realized potential. These dialectical conversations are signified by the illuminated and unilluminated halos. These halos are supported by black bars inferring that the criminal justice system supports the suppression of young black potential.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Code S - HOLLYHOOD</image:title>
<image:caption>For our proposal we selected the Hollyhock House design by Frank Loyd Wright. We wanted to examine themes of cultural appropriation. This House exemplifies design colonialism at its finest. The Hollyhock house is classified Mayan revival however we speculate that this hyper-stylized, and sensationalized “Mayan style” has little true relationships to Mayan culture beyond aesthetics. We wanted to then contrast that with our proposal using hyper stylization as a less superficial design exploration. Our ornamentation and stylization are derived from LA urban culture, we used various icon graphics such as bandana prints to create a type of positive projection of appropriation. Throughout this project we redistribute the historical syntax of the American Shotgun aesthetic in order to create an a-typical architecture that is equitable. First through the act of modulation; we designed shotgun prefab units that can be created on site then be slid into place on site. Second, our project establishes a visual syntax through our shotgun slabs, that pays physical homage to the shotgun aesthetic in a novel way. Lastly we weave connections and functionalities through our structural voids, creating not only community space but green space on every level. This three step architectural collage cites historically black quotations while creating new ways to build equitable communities</image:caption>

<image:caption>Tagging identity has always been at the essence of inhabiting existing space. We can trace this linage back to the Caves of Lascaux, over 20,000 years ago. How do we mark and archive black existence, in the year of 2022? Our proposal for 7016 Wolcott aims to answer this question through new forms of black architecture. We use graffiti, one of the five pillars of hip-hop, as a conceptual frame work to guide our spatial and aesthetic decisions. We started with a manta, “ W E A R E H E R E “. This manta acts as our linguistic and spatial keystone. From this keystone a structure is formed, while leaving room for evolution and intuition; driven by cultural and environmental cues. The plan moves and jives, floors begin to dance, walls begin to bend, and materials come to life with colorful expressions; all transforming in concert. The end product gives us a combinatory expression of blackness not governed by one ideology but many.</image:caption>
